John Nash Created Bitcoin?

John Nash Is Satoshi Nakamoto?  The Creator of Bitcoin

Recent speculation on Bitcoin Talk forums, suggests that John Nash is Satoshi Nakamoto and the creator of Bitcoin.  The full details can be read about in this thread on the Bitcoin Talk forums: link

John Nash

John Nash

Nash fits perfectly the profile for Satoshi Nakamoto. Forget that he was born in 1928, as he is still highly intelligent in videos, and teaching mathematics at Princeton.  He is American which would explain why the Bitcoin White Paper was written in perfect English, despite using a Japanese pseudonym.  John Nash is also genius of mathematics and was the principal character the movie A Beautiful Mind:

As the introduction of the movie trailer says:

John Nash was one of the most brilliant minds of his generation… who among you will be the next Einstein… I found a truly original idea and it is the only way I will ever distinguish myself, and the only way I will ever matter.

It still leaves open the question how would a pure mathematician also understand economics and computer programming; both necessary for the creation of Bitcoin.  The Wikipedia entry on John Nash says:

Nash has developed work on the role of money in society. Within the framing theorem that people can be so controlled and motivated by money that they may not be able to reason rationally about it, he has criticized interest groups that promote quasi-doctrines based on Keynesian economics that permit manipulative short-term inflation and debt tactics that ultimately undermine currencies. He has suggested a global “industrial consumption price index” system that would support the development of more “ideal money” that people could trust rather than more unstable “bad money”. He notes that some of his thinking parallels economist and political philosopher Friedrich Hayek‘s thinking regarding money and a non-typical viewpoint of the function of the authorities.

Yet still, how would this person from the movie with a severe case of schizophrenia be able to produce such a work as Bitcoin.  In the thread on Bitcoin Talk forums, it mentions: “He got over his schizophrenia in the mid 1970’s by diving into computers, game theory and devising a perfect decentralized currency called “Ideal Money”.

In 1970 John Nash was already discussing “Ideal Money”!  The Wikipedia entry on Ideal Money says:

Ideal Money is a theoretical notion promogulated by John Nash, to stabilize international currencies. It is a solution to the Triffin dilemma.

“He proposed that international exchange rates be fixed by pegging the value of each currency to a standardized basket of commodities, called the industrial consumption price index. Such a policy would curtail the ability of central banks to make monetary policy.”

The post on Bitcoin Talk forums goes into much more details about how John Nash was possibly in contact with people known to be at the start of Bitcoin such as:

– Nick Szabo:  Created BitGold and knew Hal Finney

– Hal Finney:  Proof of Work Systems

– David Chaum: E-cash developer and NSA connection

– Adam Back: Creator of Hash Cash

The post lists other contributors as well.

Because of all this evidence, John Nash should be considered as one of the top possible people that is Satoshi.  If it is true this would certainly place John Nash in the category of an Einstein.  If you have any more details about this story, please leave Bitcoin Price Live a comment in the section below!

  1. No more info on John Nash but MrR has long thought that Hayek’s thinking on economics is far superior to Keynesian thinking! John Nash sounds like a vey good candidate to be Satoshi. What an interesting life story he has, and it is fun to speculate that he is the creator of Bitcoin.
